Shifts seeks to express the connection between depression and anxiety. Each piece attempts to understand the displacement of thoughts and feelings when both illnesses occur together and work in tandem. Subjects appear content in one piece while distraught in another in order to mirror the variations found in depressive states. Alternating depictions of these feelings forces the viewer to contemplate the subject’s inner inhibitions while providing a glimpse into the uncertainty that anxiety creates. Pairing the subject matter with sporadic washes and unkempt line work renders the viewer restless.
